“You ready to meet your daughter again?” she asked.

“Yeah.” I nodded.

“Let’s go in.”

“Okay,” I said, picking up the dog and carrying it.

I followed behind Sydney into the elementary school and saw an influx of small children talking, laughing, and shuffling down the hallways to get to their buses. We turned down one hall and then another before stopping in front of room 113. As soon as she turned the knob, my heart fluttered, and my feet sank into the ground.

“Justice, baby, come on,” she whispered.

I looked down at the puppy and back at Sydney then put one foot in front of the other toward the classroom entrance. When I walked in, my eyes darted from the whiteboards with the date and homework written on them to the teacher’s desk and row of students’ desks until all I could see was my daughter’s face staring back at mine.

“Daddy?” she asked.

I nodded slowly and smiled. I passed the puppy off to Sydney as Genesis ran over to me with open arms and threw them around my neck. Her hair brushed past my nose, and I fell in love with her all over again.

“Hey, baby girl,” I said, burying my face in the crevice of her neck. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“I missed you too,” she cried. “Are you home? Is this real? You’re not leaving again?”

“I’m never leaving you again,” I promised her.

“Look what Daddy got you and Junie,” Sydney told her.

Her eyes swam with tears as she looked at the puppy in Syd’s arms.

“Oh my God!” she screamed.

Sydney and I both laughed out loud as Genesis ran over to the puppy and started petting him and kissing his forehead.

“What are you going to name him?” I asked her.

“Lucky.”

“Why Lucky?” I asked.

“Because today is the luckiest day of my life.” She smiled.

Genesis spent the next thirty minutes showing me around her classroom, introducing me to her teacher and friends who were still at school, and showing me her favorite pencil in her desk and her latest school project. We could’ve stayed there all day, but I knew we had to go. I was ready to meet my son in person without prison restrictions.

When we pulled up to my son’s preschool, the three of us and the dog got out to walk inside. We made our way to Junie’s classroom, and my eyes immediately darted to the walls covered with colorful artwork and paintings, a beanbag chair by the book corner, and a large play area with an assortment of building blocks. Genesis spotted her brother and ran over to him.

“Junie Bug, look what Daddy got us!”

“Wow!” he yelled, eyes wide.

“His name is Lucky!”

Sydney walked over to pick him up and brought him over to me.

“Say ‘hi, Daddy,’” she told him.

The two of us had a silent stare-off for a few seconds, then he interrupted it with a smile. He shyly leaned his head on Sydney’s shoulder and turned away from me.

“That’s Daddy,” he told her.
